Sergio “El Nino” Garcia survived the final day at the TPC at Sawgrass to prevent becoming a golf anachronism. Garcia hadn’t won a tournament in 3 years and came-out victorious over Paul Goydos in a sudden death playoff.
Fans of The Office realized that Garcia must have hit about 1200 balls the day before to prepare for the The Players Championship.
Goydos is a part-time substitute teacher from Long Beach who hit his first shot in the playoff into the water and watched his hopes sink with his ball. Don’t feel to be bad for Goydos, he walked away with $1.026 million for second place.
Garcia went home with $1.71 million, which is the richest purse in golf. He will come in the U.S. Open in Torrey Pines, San Diego in June with momentum. Garica is still waiting to earn his first major, and not go down as one of the biggest hypes in recent golf memory. FYI – Left Micholson was the defending champion and finished tied for 21st but added $91,000 after choking from a 4th place start to Sunday’s round.
